What Do American Universities Look For In A Student? – Los Gatos ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services

Los Gatos ACT SAT test prep tutoring ServicesThe college application process can be challenging and even intimidating. American Universities in particular are known for taking into account more than test scores and GPAs. They want students to be well rounded and display skills and interests that will contribute to the university’s community, as well as have the initiative it takes to be successful in a career.

GPA and Course Offerings
When you apply to colleges play up your strengths. It is ok if you didn’t get a 4.0. According to CollegeXpress, universities also take into account the kinds of courses your high school offered and whether or not you were willing to challenge yourself.
Commitment to Extracurriculars

Universities also like to see commitment to an extracurricular. It could be a sport, music, or a club. Rather than quantity of extracurriculars, universities like to see that you stuck with something for multiple years and advanced. Becoming a leader, team captain or organizer demonstrates your commitment to something you care about, your desire to excel and your ability to lead other people. Don’t forget to include volunteer work. Showing that you give your time to help your community makes you a desirable candidate.
Recommendations

Many universities require recommendations. Be sure you choose teachers, counselors, coaches or others who know you well and know why you would be a good fit for a particular university or academic program.
Essays

Essays are also very important. Choose stories and examples that communicate your unique personality and your interests. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, but do be sure you are writing coherently and with excellent grammar. Have someone else proofread your essay before you submit it.
Exams
Finally, your SAT or ACT score will be a significant factor. Make sure you prepare well for the exam and do your best. It is a good idea to get help if you are unsure about how to prepare.
Use Your Strengths
When you apply to universities, play up your strengths. Look at past admissions statistics and see what characteristics, test scores and GPAs the university you are applying to accepts or prefers. If you don’t fit into the averages, point out your strengths and why you would be an excellent addition to the university and the academic program you want to pursue. You may be exactly what admissions officers are looking for.

More About Mr. Test Prep’s Los Gatos ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services

Michael Romano has been offering his Los Gatos SAT prep services for almost two decades. He’s seen thousands of kids and helped with just about every kind of standardized testing anxiety a student could have. This has taught him that increased scores come down to confidence. Yes, you have to understand the material, but confidence is—more often than not—the #1 cause of a student’s trouble with testing. Bearing that in mind, he has created an SAT tutoring program that builds confidence by desensitizing his students to the conditions of the test, while providing them with targeted instruction on both the academic content of the exam and the tips and tricks that make it so much easier.

One Simple Trick To Becoming A Better Listener- Palo Alto ACT SAT test prep tutoring

Palo Alto ACT SAT test prep tutoringLeaders are good listeners. Becoming an effective listener can help you in your classes and will help you succeed in all areas of life. Good listeners can learn more efficiently and become more effective problem solvers.

One Bad Habit

An article from the Harvard Business Review cited an extensive study that found, “immediately after the average person has listened to someone talk, he remembers only about half of what he has heard—no matter how carefully he thought he was listening.”

Even if you think you are a good listener, there may be one particular habit that is keeping you from being an excellent listener. Many people develop their responses or think about what they will say next, while another person is speaking. This habit prevents you from hearing everything the speaker is saying. The last thing they say is just as important as the first. Formulating your response before a speaker is done may cause you to jump to conclusions, respond in an unhelpful manner, or solve the wrong problem. Listening requires listening thoroughly and then giving yourself space to think before you respond.

One Good Habit

The Fast Company suggests one way to help you listen thoroughly is to summarize the speaker’s remarks. Repeat what you have heard back to the speaker. This will allow you to ask for clarification, if there was anything you didn’t understand. It also allows the speaker to correct anything you may have misinterpreted. Once you are certain you understand exactly what the speaker is communicating, you can respond appropriately.

Focus

Being able to focus on the speaker rather than your response is a challenging skill to master, but once you have, you will notice that you will have fewer misunderstandings and will be more successful at coming up with successful solutions. Listening thoroughly in you courses will allow you to contribute more fully to class discussions and have a deeper understanding of course material.

Improve Your Skills

If you want to be a leader, start working on your listening skills now. Excellent listening skills will be beneficial for learning, working and even in social situations. When you find yourself listening all the way to the end of statements and responding slower you will know that you have succeeded in becoming an excellent listener.

4 Tips To Improve Your Reading Efficiency – Menlo Park SAT Test Prep Services

Menlo Park SAT Test Prep Services

Reading is a significant part of performing well on the SAT. A high score depends on the ability to quickly read and comprehend material in a variety of subjects. Efficient reading is also helpful in all areas of life, when you read efficiently you can complete homework faster and spend less time studying for exams. Here are four tips to improve your reading efficiency so that you can have more time and perform better on exams.

1) Read with Purpose

Don’t read mindlessly and expect to understand the material when you are done. Browse over headings, introductory paragraphs, graphs and figures, and conclusions and work to develop an idea about what the main points will be. Ask questions, so that when you go back and read the text you are looking for a specific answer. When you prepare before you read, you will retain more information and have a deeper understanding of the material after the first reading. You can avoid rereading sentences and paragraphs over and over.

2) Practice Daily

Purdue University points out that reading is a skill and must be practiced to be improved. A tip sheet from Purdue suggests reading at least fifteen minutes everyday. Spending time reading will help you develop both speed and comprehension. Expose yourself to varying levels of reading so that you have the ability to move quickly through easy material, as well as skills to tackle tougher vocabulary and complex subjects.

3) Avoid the Highlighter

An article from Princeton University suggests avoiding a highlighter. When you feel tempted to highlight a piece of text, make a note in the margin instead. Write something about the key concept or how it relates to other material. Write out a definition or an opposing viewpoint. Taking notes will help you engage with the material and internalize it much better than simply highlighting a passage.

4) Increase your Vocabulary

Having a broad vocabulary will help you comprehend complex passages quickly. You can increase your vocabulary by looking up unfamiliar words when you come across them. Try reading material that is challenging or covers subjects that are unfamiliar. You can also improve your comprehension by attempting to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from their context. Guess the meaning first, then look up the word to see the actual definition. The skill of understanding words within context will be helpful on exams like the SAT.

Efficiency Comes With Practice

Ultimately reading efficiency comes with practice. Hone your skill by working on it a little bit every day. Being an efficient reader will help you score well on the SAT, but it will also be essential for everyday tasks throughout your life.

How Procrastination Affects Your Learning – Not In A Good Way – Los Altos ACT Tutor Services

Los Altos ACT Tutor Services

Procrastination may feel like it is saving you time, but ultimately, it is costing you. Procrastination requires that you have to work harder to learn, it may result in grades that are lower that your potential, and you may experience higher levels of stress.

Over Learning

StudyRight points out that procrastination often results in a phenomenon called over learning. Over learning is what happens when you have to learn material again and again because you didn’t internalize it the first time. Cramming to memorize information the night before the test might help you pass the test. However, due to the way memory works, you are likely to forget the information in about a week. You will have to relearn the material the next time you encounter it instead of building on what you already know. Over the course of your education, this continued practice of procrastination will cost you time.

Lower Grades

A survey performed by Knewton found that students who procrastinate receive lower marks on their assignments than students who don’t. The study discovered that students who started their assignments less than three days before the due date received about three points lower on their grade than the class average. Three points may not seem like much, but throughout a semester, receiving lower grades than your potential on every assignment could significantly hurt your overall grade.

Stress

Procrastinating can raise your level of stress. When you have anxiety over whether or not you will be able to complete the assignment on time or learn information for an exam in a short amount of time, your stress level will raise significantly. Procrastination also often results in a lack of sleep. Staying up all night to get something done can raise your level of stress and affect your performance throughout the following day and even weeks. Procrastination can start a cycle of stress that is hard to break. It is easier to plan your time appropriately and stay on top of your work.

A Costly Habit

Procrastination can be a costly habit. Learn how to manage your time so that you can perform at your highest potential. You may enjoy your work more, get higher scores and more rest. In the long run, you will be more productive when you don’t procrastinate.

What You Eat Can Affect Your Brain – Tips For Improved Studying-Santa Clara ACT Tutor

Santa Clara ACT Tutor copy

Everyone knows the saying “you are what you eat,” but did you ever consider that what you eat actually

does affect your brain?

Your study time will be more productive when you power your brain with foods

that enhance your memory and your focus. These foods will boost your brain power and improve your

studying.

Complex Carbohydrates

Carbs give you the energy you need to focus for long periods of time. WebMD suggests eating a whole

grain snack to keep your energy levels high. However, not any carb will work. Avoid sugars found in

candy and large portions found in pasta. These snacks will cause your blood sugar to spike and leave

you feeling sleepy after a short burst of energy. Choose a whole grain piece of toast or bowl of whole

grain cereal instead.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid

According to Eating Well, Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with better mood and concentration and are

important for brain development, all of which are significant for performing well on an exam. These fatty

acids are most commonly found in cold water fish like salmon and trout, but they can also be found in

nuts, eggs, and even fortified granola bars.

Iron

Iron can affect memory and attention. If you are having a difficult time staying focused or even awake

while you study, you may want to increase your iron intake. Foods high in iron include beef, beans, kale,

and spinach.

Water

Drinking water may seem too simple, but many people forget to drink enough water during the day.

Staying well hydrated will help you remain focused and alert and increase oxygen to the brain. When you

are feeling hungry or distracted while trying to study, start by drinking a cup of water before you snack on

other foods or sugary drinks.

Take Care of Your Brain

Eating well will help you think well. A well rounded diet will keep you physically and mentally healthy,

which will improve your studying. Start your study time with a healthy snack or meal and save sugary

treats or oily junk food for a reward when you are done studying. Then you will have the energy you need

to learn and retain new information, which will ultimately help you perform well on the SAT.

Cutting Edge Philosophy – Why No Homework Is The Best Option For Results- Sunnyvale ACT Tutor

Sunnyvale ACT TutorA study conducted in 2014 attempted to discover the effects of homework on students at high performing California high schools. The study found that the average amount of homework reported was three hours every night. 56% of the students surveyed reported that homework was the highest stressor in their lives. An article from CNN reported on the study and stated that the stress was causing major health problems among students ranging from ulcers to exhaustion. The article also speculated that more homework did not correlate with better academic achievement.

Stretched Beyond Limits

Students are already stretched to their limit by simply completing the daily tasks needed to perform well in their courses. Additional homework will only increase stress levels and contribute to health problems. Higher stress and health issues do not result in high test scores.

Results Without Homework

At Mr. Test Prep, we are  proud of our ability to help your student perform their best on the SAT or ACT without additional homework. Our methods help relieve stress and build confidence. Many test prep services offer guarantees contingent on the completion of homework. This additional homework might cause your student to skip other necessary homework, which could result in lower grades.

Other Factors in College Admissions

Mr. Test Prep recognizes that grades and extracurricular participation are also significant factors in college admissions. Sacrificing these important aspects of a student’s life for a high test score is counterproductive. Instead, Mr. Test Prep builds confidence by offering practice exams and addressing trouble spots, while teaching test taking strategies on the spot. No outside homework is required.

By eliminating outside homework for test preparation, your student can focus on their studies, reduce their stress level and feel rested rather than exhausted on the day of the exam.

Emotional and Physical Health

Don’t let your child suffer the consequences of feeling constantly overwhelmed. Take care of their emotional and physical well being, as well as their academic performance. Your student can perform well without  the added stress of homework.

Sunnyvale ACT Tutor

Mr. Test Prep helps every type of student—yes, even the shy ones—maximize their score potential. A lot of shy kids find the scrutiny of full one-on-one tutoring to be too intense, but at my Sunnyvale SAT Prep center, I create a safe environment that is perfect for kids who find verbal participation to be stressful. By combining group testing, with targeted instruction, shy kids can get the help they need in a way that works for their personality. No more awkward silences. No more pushy tutors. Just lots of practice and the guidance of an experienced educator.

The Science Of Study – Where Dedication Means Results-San Mateo ACT Teacher

San Mateo ACT Teacher

There are many different ways to study, but science shows that some methods of study are more

productive than others. When you are dedicated to your studies and study using the most effective tools,

you are certain to see positive results.

Study in Short Segments

You should study for no longer than 90 minutes at a time. Medical Daily suggests that you cut back to just

30 minutes of study time. This is because the brain is wired to process smaller bits of information rather

than larger chunks. Study for 30 to 90 minutes and let the information sink in before you move on to new

material. Studying in small chunks also has the advantage of studying feeling less overwhelming. It is

much easier to fit 30 minutes of studying into your day than hours and hours of intensive study.

Don’t Forget

The Best Colleges points out that studies have found reviewing material within the same day of learning it

prevents you from forgetting 80% of what you learned. Going over your notes from the day every evening

is the most efficient way to remember what you have learned. If you use this trick, you won’t have to

spend so much time studying to relearn material when it is time to take exams.

Teach to Learn

Teaching the concepts that you are learning to someone else can help solidify ideas in your mind.

Teaching requires a mastery of the concept and and the ability to synthesize the material in a way that

makes sense to someone else. Offer to tutor or partner with a friend and work to teach the material you

are studying. Alternatively, you may benefit from someone else’s teaching. If there is a concept you are

struggling with, ask a friend or hire a tutor to help you learn it in a new way.

There are new scientific discoveries every day about memory, learning and how the brain works. Make

sure you are using the best methods to learn and retain material so that your study time is efficient and

productive. When you study well, you will be successful without needing to study as much.

San Mateo ACT Teacher

Mr. Test Prep has been a part of the San Mateo SAT Prep community for nearly 20 years. His experience working with students—from math wizzes to numberphobes, from novelists-in-training to kids who hate to read—has shown him that improving test results first requires improving a student’s confidence. To directly address this important facet of SAT prep, his tutoring program exposes students to the conditions of the test, while training them in subject-specific skills and teaching them testing strategies that can make the test much easier.

It Takes Only 3 Steps To Help Your Child Excel In Their SAT- Santa Clara ACT Prep

Santa Clara SAT Prep copy

As a parent you want to make all of your child’s dreams come true, including getting into the college of their choice. To make their dreams come true, you need to help them achieve their goals when it comes to the SAT. Here are 3 steps to helping your child excel when it comes to the SAT

1) Set Goals

Help your child determine what it takes to get into the schools they want. Then set a realistic expectation about what score they should aim for on the SAT. Don’t add to their pressure and anxiety by putting expectations on them that they don’t need to get into the schools they want. Appropriate goals will help your child succeed without too much stress.

2) Test Prep

Test Prep courses can help your child meet their goals. Mr. Test Prep guarantees that your child will be able to attend sessions as long as it takes to meet their SAT goals. Our methods build confidence and familiarize students with the exam so that they can do their best on test day. Helping your student attend a test prep course that won’t add to their anxiety will help them excel when they take the SAT.

3) Be A Cheerleader

Speak encouraging and positive words. You child has enough negative self-talk going on in their head. Don’t contribute. Never accuse your child of being lazy or bad in a particular subject area. They will live into these accusations. Instead, tell them how smart they are and how certain you are that they will do well. Fill their mind with positive thoughts and these positive thoughts will battle anxiety and stress that often show up on the test day. You can be your child’s biggest cheerleader.

Support and Encouragement

Give your child support and encouragement as they prepare for the SAT. Help them choose test prep methods that will boost their confidence and give them the tools they need to excel on exam days. Celebrate their victories when they achieve their goals to help develop their self confidence. While you cannot take the test for them, you can shape your child while they prepare and give them the tools they need to succeed.

Santa Clara ACT  Prep

Mr. Test Prep gives his students the deep learning skills they need to perform well on a lifetime worth of tests. At his Santa Clara SAT Prep center, he helps his students overcome years worth of bad mental habits and poor confidence so they’re ready to take on the test and reach their maximum score potential. {FLOOD} How to find the best sat tutor in

Duke Graduate • 18 Years Experience • Over 1500 Students

Mr-Test-Prep-Website-SAT - FREE TRIAL SESSION GAURANTEE
DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TO IMPROVE HIS OR HER STANDARDIZED SAT TEST SCORES?
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MASTER SAT TEST TUTOR IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BAY AREA  WHO REQUIRES NO HOMEWORK AND GUARANTEES RESULTS?

I can help. Working with high school students for over 18 years, I have developed a philosophy supported by skills and techniques proven to result in superb  SAT Tutoring and ACT test results.

We all move through the world with a self-image that sets what we believe we are capable of. This self-image often under serves our potential because it has been formed by a hodge podge of experiences, some encouraging and affirming, others anything but. The sense of self is malleable particularly in young people.

I work to expose their doubts and fears as more imagined than real and to convince them that they are much more capable than they realize. This serves the all-important self-image in a very powerful way. It not only results in vastly improved standardized scores but also recalibrates the belief in what’s possible.

As I work with my students, I never lose sight of my real objective. I may be helping them ace their standardized tests, but ultimately I am elevating more than just a score.

Learn More about Our Free Neal, CA Best SAT Tutor Trial Session Here

My program is not a traditional “one on one” tutoring situation. I have learned from my almost two decades of experience that there is a better and less painful way to prepare kids for these tests.  Over the course of each 2-hour session, students meet with me for three private, one-on-one conferences (totaling about 20 minutes per student, each session),

The value of each 2 hour session is multi faceted:

  • Self timed sections in a group environment similar to the actual testing environment
  • Immediate correction of mistakes and tutoring to specific content or errors
  • Test taking strategies given as they arise during test taking, making them more relevant and easier to remember and apply
  • Confidence building with every interaction
  • Session by session readjustment of areas of focus based on observable progress

Investments of time and money vary from student to student. Regardless of ability, students that complete the number of sessions we agree to upfront have a great chance of meeting or surpassing their test prep objectives.

TESTIMONIALS

SAT Exam Tutorials Los Altos CA

I had gone to over three different standardized testing tutors in the Bay Area since my freshman year. All left me unsatisfied, with mediocre results and my mother constantly reprimanding me for spending so much money on multiple exams and different tutors. On a whim, we tried Mr. Test Prep. Many of my friends had gone to him and raved about how his tutoring style is unique, effective, and definitely worth the money. They all succeeded in their standardized test preps, why shouldn’t I?
I can clearly remember Mr. Test Prep’s response when I said, “I’m no good at math and science.” He said, “Don’t think that way! These questions are easy if you think of them as easy. Let me break ‘em down for you…” Ever since then, the ACT has not intimidated me with the daunting math and science sections. His tricks to make sure I didn’t make any “silly” mistakes even increased my scores to near-perfection in the subjects that I was stronger in – reading, writing, and English! Additionally, the group testing environment was insanely helpful in practicing what to expect during test day. Mr. Test Prep’s unpredictable outbursts of songs and people’s sneezing and coughing inevitably allowed me to block out the irrelevant and focus on the test. I also still do his meditations today before a big event or test! They have assisted me greatly in becoming more centered, and have me diving into any task headfirst with steady hands and tranquility.
Not only did Mr. Test Prep increase my confidence in test taking, but he also helped boost my overall determination in conquering whatever may stand in my way – including math and science! The results of Mr. Test Prep’s tutoring are not merely numbers. If you are seeking someone who is more than a tutor – someone who is a role model, friend, and a hilarious mentor, then Mr. Test Prep is for you!

Michael is by far the best mentor I have ever had. With his help, I was able to raise my SAT score by 240 points, which ultimately allowed me to get into several of my dream schools, including Dartmouth and Brown. He doesn’t merely teach the right answers, rather he provides his students with the mental tools and strategies necessary to think critically. One of the most important tools he focuses on is confidence. Through genuine, personable mentorship and support, Michael elevates not only test scores but also self-esteem that will benefit your child beyond his or her college process. His tutoring style can best be described as process of elimination: constant practice with past SAT tests eliminates the fear of unfamiliarity of the test; one-on-one guidance eliminates the pressure to move at a pace other than your own; his smile and sense of humor eliminates the fear of making mistakes…and all that’s left is your child’s fullest potential. Michael saw something in me, from our first session together, and cultivated that spark and turned it into something great. I have gained so much more than just points on my SAT score from working with Michael and it is an opportunity that I am grateful for every day. I highly recommend Michael as a tutor whether it’s for SAT, SAT II, ACT or anything!

I would not be at the University of Michigan without Michael Romano. Plain and simple.

When I was in high school, I had about a 3.3 GPA. I was below the threshold for a lot of schools’ GPA standards, especially Michigan’s. The only hope I had of finding my way to a big time school like Michigan was to seriously differentiate myself on my standardized tests. Unfortunately, those weren’t going great either (I was scoring high, but not in the 99th percentile like I’d need to in order to overcome my GPA).

I took a Princeton Review SAT course before coming to Mr. Test Prep. I thought it made sense to try a cheaper option first, I could not have been more wrong. Princeton Review didn’t treat me like a person. I don’t think the instructor ever even knew my name. What was even worse was that my score didn’t go up one point. They used umbrella teaching techniques that tried to address the needs of an entire class at once. I don’t think it helped anyone very much.

I went to Michael for a free practice test and consultation. He looked over the mistakes I’d made on the practice, congratulated me on already being a high scorer, and then told me he could get me where I needed to be. 2200 or higher.

Well, I’m at Michigan now, and I can tell you that my GPA did not improve my senior year of high school. It was Michael’s tutoring that got me into the school of my dreams. It’s that simple. I’ve been accepted into one of the most prestigious writing programs in the country, and started my own game company, and none of that would be possible without the hours Michael spent on me, personally, one-on-one, making every painstaking point on every last practice SAT the most importing part of his life at that time.

Near the end of my third year at the University of Michigan, I got a message from Mr. Test Prep asking how I’d been (that’s right, Michael cares enough about his students that he checked in three years after I took the SAT and ACT). He was interested in my life at Michigan, the projects I’d been a part of, and the progress of my writing career. He cared about getting me here, and he cares about where I go from here, and I only know him because he was my SAT tutor.

The least I can do after receiving that kind of genuine support from Michael is share my story with you all. Mr. Test Prep can make a difference on your test scores, I think every review on this page is a testament to that, but what I want to make abundantly clear is that Mr. Test Prep can make a difference in your life, which goes far beyond the investment of time and money spent on his tutoring sessions.
